# 23 Links with mathematics

Many of the reasoning patterns of formal operations dealt with in *Thinking Science *are very relevant also to mathematics. The Cognitive Acceleration in Maths Education Project developed a series of lessons (*Thinking Maths *published by Heinemann) based on similar principles to *Thinking Science*, for use with the same age range of pupils. It is probable that there is an additive effect on overall achievement where a school uses both the *Thinking Science *and the *Thinking Maths *courses. Schools using both see the programmes as complementary and find that their use leads to a ‘whole-school’ approach to the development of thinking skills.
