Many of the reasoning patterns of formal operations dealt with in Thinking Science are very relevant also to mathematics. The Cognitive Acceleration in Maths Education Project developed a series of lessons (Thinking Maths published by Heinemann) based on similar principles to Thinking Science, for use with the same age range of pupils. It is probable that there is an additive effect on overall achievement where a school uses both the Thinking Science and the Thinking Maths courses. Schools using both see the programmes as complementary and find that their use leads to a ‘whole-school’ approach to the development of thinking skills.
