Dewch i Feddwl Mathemateg (9 i 11 oed) Gwers 3 Giants Palace

Introduction

Introduction
In this activity on decimals, children use non-standard decimal measures to measure a range of objects. They discuss how they can represent these measurements numerically. They then order a series of decimal numbers.
Episode 1:
Children discuss the use of a foot length as a unit of measure. They struggle to measure object of various sizes using the ‘foot’. They then use a 1/10 measure to measure smaller objects and discuss ways of representing the larger and smaller measures numerically.
Episode 2:
The children are now introduced to 1/100 of a foot as a unit of measure. Children explain what simple decimals represent, using the ‘foot’ and the ‘1/10 foot’. They discuss the fact that 10/10 is the same as a whole, that 10/100 is the same as 1/10, etc.
Episode 3:
The children order a range of decimal numbers using their knowledge of the ‘foot’ and 1/10 or 1/100 of a ‘foot’.
