Cyflwyniad

Introduction
n this activity children explore the value of coding to identify a particular object in an irregular arrangement.
Episode 1:
The children explore ways of describing a particular tree within a garden. The children sort this vocabulary into groups eg type words, size words and position words.
Episode 2:
The children are encouraged to reduce the number of words required and to develop a coding system to describe the location of the trees.
Episode 3:
Children explore a more complex arrangement of trees and note that their coding system is too simple. They develop a more complex system involving sectioning the garden.
Aims
  • Children understand the need for a coding system for complex arrangements
  • • Children learn that different situations may need different coding systems
  • Materials
    Supplied

  • Resource Sheet A showing a simple garden arrangement
  • Resource Sheet B showing a more complex garden arrangement
  • Before you teach
Photocopy Resource Sheet A one A3 size and one A4 size per group and B, one A3 size and two A4 size per group
    Vocabulary
Large/big, small/little, medium-sized, left, right, up down, beside, near, towards, next to, opposite, code
