Dewch i Feddwl Mathemateg (9 i 11 oed) Gwers 8 Rhifau Synhwyrol

Introduction

Introduction
This lesson encourages children to think about the relative size of numbers in relation to real-life situations and as possible sensible answers to calculations. It therefore encourages the children to use estimation and an understanding of number properties to check answers to calculations.
Episode 1:
Children decide how a range of numbers best fits a real-life situation.
Episode 2:
The class explore a range of possible answers to addition calculations, deciding whether they are sensible possibilities or not. They use this exploration to generalise about checking addition answers.
Episode 3:
The class explore a range of possible answers to subtraction calculations, deciding whether they are sensible possibilities or not. They use this exploration to generalise about checking subtraction answers.
Extension
The class could continue to look at similar generalisations for multiplication.
Aims
  • Children understand that answers to calculations must be within certain parameters in order to be sensible possibilities
  • • Children develop their ability to check the answers to calculations
  • Materials
    Supplied

  • Resource Sheet A showing addition calculations
  • Resource Sheet B showing multiplication calculations
  • Before you teach
Photocopy Resource Sheets A and B one per pair
