Introduction
Introduction |
---|
This lesson encourages children to think about the relative size of numbers in relation to real-life situations and as possible sensible answers to calculations. It therefore encourages the children to use estimation and an understanding of number properties to check answers to calculations. |
Episode 1: |
Children decide how a range of numbers best fits a real-life situation. |
Episode 2: |
The class explore a range of possible answers to addition calculations, deciding whether they are sensible possibilities or not. They use this exploration to generalise about checking addition answers. |
Episode 3: |
The class explore a range of possible answers to subtraction calculations, deciding whether they are sensible possibilities or not. They use this exploration to generalise about checking subtraction answers. |
Extension |
The class could continue to look at similar generalisations for multiplication. |
