Introduction Feeding the Fish |
---|
In this activity on ratio, children use the relative sizes of fish to calculate how much each fish should be fed. They note the differences between a sequence of doubling and one increasing by 50% each time. |
Episode 1: |
Children discuss a way to measure the relative proportions of a family of fish which doubles in length for each subsequent fish. They use these proportions to calculate how much each fish should be fed, based on their knowledge of the smallest fish. |
Episode 2: |
Children discuss a way to measure the relative proportions of a family of fish which increases in length by 50% for each subsequent fish. They use these proportions to calculate how much each fish should be fed, based on their knowledge of the smallest fish. The children compare the two fish families and their relative proportions. |
Alternative episode for younger students: |
Children discuss a way to measure the relative proportions of a family of fish which increases in length and width by 50% for each subsequent fish. They use these proportions to calculate how much each fish should be fed, based on their knowledge of the smallest fish. They compare this proportional increase to the doubling in length for Episode 1. |
