Introduction
Introduction |
---|
This activity explores place value as a number-writing convention appropriate for use by people. Children look at our base 10 convention as one convenient to the 10 fingers of two hands, then experiment with base 8 convention in cartoon-land. As an extension they look at the binary system, the basis for the digital age. They represent different amounts using the three systems and compare their efficiency in describing numbers. |
Episode 1: |
Starting with the ease of recognising numbers shown on fingers on our two hands, children explore representing numbers with a system of base 8, using four fingered hands. They discuss the difficulties in representing numbers using this system. |
Episode 2: |
The children represent numbers using both base 10 and base 8 systems. They compare the two number systems. |
Episode 3: |
The children explore representing numbers using a binary system. |
Reflection |
The children compare the three systems. |
Aims |
• Children understand that numbers can be represented in different ways • Children develop their knowledge of place value systems |
