Lesson 14 Tents
Worksheet 2 How does the radius relate to the semicircle?
Joe’s tents are made by stretching fabric over a frame of flexible rods. The rods form a semicircle.
The smallest tent allows two people to sleep side-by-side. He has worked out that each person needs about 1 metre across the tent to be comfortable. The length of each tent is the same, about 2 metres.
Joe’s tents come in a range of sizes: 2 people, 4 people, 6 people, etc.
What he has realised is that the radius of the semicircle relates to the curved length around the semicircle.
Draw some semicircles and use the string, or the flexible strip, to explore the link between the radius of the semicircle and the curved length around the semicircle.
