A problem for the apprentice.

  • What is the longest border ribbon that the apprentice will have to prepare to go round 12 square tiles? To help you could use the grid provided, or squared paper; or use another method. A table like this might be useful.

  • What is the shortest border ribbon that the apprentice will have to prepare to go around 12 square tiles?
  • Work out the same for 24 square tiles.

How do you know that you have the right answers?

Look at the longest ribbon length for 24 tiles.

What happens when you halve the length of the longer side to:

  • The number of square tiles?

  • The ribbon length?

What happens every time you repeat this process?
